'/Applications/VMware OVF Tool/ovftool' The can be one of the following: A path to an OVF or OVA file (a local file path, or an HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP URL). A virtual machine (a local file path to a.vmx file). A vSphere locator identifying a virtual machine or vApp on vCenter, ESXi, or VMware Server. The VMware OVF Tool converts an OVF VM image into VMX format, so the VM image can be used with VMware Converter. You don’t need this tool if you are importing images directly from a VMware hypervisor, such as ESXi, VMware Workstation, or VMware Fusion into Skytap; OVF Tool is a supplemental tool that supports VMware Converter.
When you enable a vApp template for download, the server performs several operations to create an OVF package and make it available to the transfer service.
![]()
The server reconstructs the OVF descriptor using information in the vApp template. The server excludes any deployment-specific information that the template contains, and populates the descriptor's References element with links to files, such as .vmdk files, that are part of the package.
